The Society of African Missions (SMA) was founded in Lyon, December 8, 1856 by Bishop Marion Brésillac. Its members, priests and laity, working among Africans, especially in Africa.

The Society of African Missions is organized into Provinces (Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, USA, Lyon and the Netherlands) in Districts (Canada, Spain and Strasbourg), in Districts-in-Training (Bight of Benin, Gulf of Guinea, Great Lakes, India, Philippines, Poland). Its head office is based in Rome, where the Superior General and his Council shall ensure the unity and the animation of the whole Society.
