Novena to Bishop Brésillac (Day1)
Plenary Council 2022
SMA News - January 2023
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has had the grace to welcome on the soil of its ancestors the visit of his holiness Pope Francis. The last visit of the Supreme Pontiff to the DRC was that of Pope John Paul II in 1985, 38 years ago. This visit takes place in a context of crisis: armed conflicts in the East of the country, attempts to balkanize the country, economic crisis, and abysmal social misery.

On the occasion of his 40th apostolic journey and only the fifth to Africa, I decided to take a step back and reflect on the Pope's visit to the DRC from January 31 to February 3, 2023. Did this visit achieve its objectives and are there lessons to be learned? To help me in this reflection are Fathers Alois Kituba, an SMA priest from the Democratic Republic of Congo based in Lyon and Godefroid Mombula Alekiabo, CICM in Kinshasa.

A man, simple, small in stature, with the weight of age beginning to be felt, but still lively, passionate, and still just as busy: he is in Rome for several meetings, among which a conference with the San Egidio community. La Nocetta, where he resides for the occasion, witnesses the comings and goings of people he meets one after the other. That person is Grégoire AHONGBONON, the friend of people suffering from psychiatric illnesses.

Many countries in the world observe All Saints Day. In certain parts of the world and especially in Europe, such as France, Italy, Poland, and Austria, (but not exclusive to them), this day is a public holiday meaning schools, banks, government offices, and most businesses are closed. The atmosphere of All Saints' Day is unique. In countries such as Belgium, France, Hungary, and Italy people bring flowers to the graves of dead relatives.

At the opening of the Exhibit on the World’s religions on the 31st March 2005, at Santa Clara University, Dr. Hans Kung said, “There will be no peace among nations without peace among religions. There will be no peace among the religions without dialogue among the religions.” These strong words explain the need for fraternal dialogue in our mission ventures in today’s world. Consequently, as members of the Society of African Missions, with regards to the subject of dialogue in mission, we are bound by our Constitutions and Laws.
