In a world characterized by diversity and globalization, bridging cultural gaps and fostering understanding becomes paramount, especially in religious contexts. The Fraternité Laïque Missionnaire (FLM) concluded its second edition of a three-day welcome session this Sunday, 24th September for Society of African Missions (SMA) priests who have freshly arrived in France.
This initiative, attended by esteemed figures like Provincial Superior Fr. François du Penhoat and his councilor Michel Cartatéguy, former archbishop of Niamey- Niger proved to be a valuable step towards integrating these newcomers into the rich tapestry of French culture.
The program was comprehensive, delving into various facets of French society. Participants engaged in enlightening discussions on the social and societal organization in France, exploring the dynamics of family, couples, and daily life. The session also addressed pressing issues concerning the Church in France, touching upon the role of permanent deacons and the involvement of laypeople in church matters. Real-world examples of mission and commitment were shared, offering valuable insights.
One highlight of the session was the presentation on the Church and society, featuring the testimony of a former mayor and the experiences of a lay association. Additionally, Fr. Yves Chogli from Togo shared his journey as a "newcomer," providing a personal perspective on acclimatizing to the French culture and society.
The participants were overwhelmingly pleased with the session. FLM members described it as a forum filled with robust exchanges and genuine sincerity. These enlightening discussions extended beyond the confines of the lecture hall, permeating mealtime conversations, where bonds were strengthened.
Towards the conclusion of the session, participants expressed a desire for more engagement with young people and deeper conversations on sensitive subjects such as same-sex unions and remarried divorcees, seeking to align their beliefs with contemporary societal realities. Immigration, another sensitive issue, sparked lengthy and meaningful discussions, reflecting the importance of addressing complex topics openly and constructively.
In a world often divided by cultural differences, FLM's welcome session serves as an exemplary model of promoting understanding and unity among individuals from diverse backgrounds. By facilitating dialogue and fostering empathy, it paves the way for a more harmonious coexistence in an increasingly interconnected world.
